Forsaken not forgotten

October 15, 2018

Last week I was praying about somebody in my life who is precious to me but my relationship with them at the moment is virtually non-existent. It is not through trying on my part but I couldn’t understand the reason why. God spoke to me about this situation. He said when Jesus was on the cross, I didn’t turn away from Him but the sin that was put on His life prevented Him from seeing Me. In the same way, the sin, shame and guilt in that person’s life is keeping them from having a relationship with me.

As I was thinking on those words, the title of this blog came to me – forsaken not forgotten. Many times we feel in our own lives that God has forgotten about us, but He hasn’t. There is something in our lives that is preventing us from seeing Him.

Forsaken in the dictionary means abandoned or deserted. We feel like God has abandoned us in our time of need. Jesus felt the same way on the cross. In Matthew 27:46, Jesus cried out my God my God why have you forsaken or abandoned me. But God promises us in the Bible that He will never leave us or forsake us in Hebrews 13:5.

So what do we do if we feel forsaken or abandoned in our time of need?

1. We need to repent of any sins in our lives. 1 John 1:9 tells us that if we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. We are made clean.

2. We need to submit to God in James 4:7. This means to humble ourselves or realise that God is everything to us and without Him we can’t do anything.

3. Worship God. It says in Psalms 22:3 that God inhabits the praises of His people. When we praise and worship, God draws closer to us. We are submitting to Him and He loves to hear us praise. Isaiah 61:3 says that He will give us a garment of praise for our spirit of heaviness.

God longs for us to be in relationship with Him and doesn’t want anything to hinder it. Just like I want the relationship with that person restored and long for it, so God longs for it with us.

Jesus took our forsaken not forgotten on the cross when He died for us. So we don’t need to feel that way anymore. God loves you so much and desires a relationship with you. That is the reason Jesus came – to restore and renew.

This week if you feel forsaken, remember that it is not God. Put on your garment of praise and sing and worship your way back to God. His arms are outstretched waiting for you.

Bless you heaps and keep living the life God intended for you.
