Hi how are you all today? I am great and currently on holidays on a cruise ship. The cruise is in my country so has been relaxing; not worrying about airports and different currency etc. It is a holiday I needed as I have slept lots. How are you all?
In the last couple of days I have been watching the tug boats pull and guide our very large boat out of the different ports we have been in. The verses in the Bible that have spoken to me as I watched the tug boats in action is found in James 3: 3 -6 and in the Message Bible it states:
3-5 A bit in the mouth of a horse controls the whole horse. A small rudder on a huge ship in the hands of a skilled captain sets a course in the face of the strongest winds. A word out of your mouth may seem of no account, but it can accomplish nearly anything—or destroy it!
5-6 It only takes a spark, remember, to set off a forest fire. A careless or wrongly placed word out of your mouth can do that. By our speech we can ruin the world, turn harmony to chaos, throw mud on a reputation, send the whole world up in smoke and go up in smoke with it, smoke right from the pit of hell.
This translation talks about word out of your mouth whereas other translations say tongue. I prefer tongue as it depicts a small part of our body.
Whilst I was looking at the tug boat and our cruise ship, I was likening the tug to our tongue and the cruise ship to our body. Our body has lots of power but that power is no use when our bodies need specific guidance. That’s where the tug boat comes in. It has less power of itself than a cruise ship but when the big ships need guidance, it has great power.
The same with our tongue. In itself it has little power but its role in guiding our bodies means it has immense power. That power can be used for good or for bad.
The tongue can form words that come out of our mouths that are blessing and healing words or cursing and sickness words.
Let’s go back to Genesis 1 and notice how God created the earth. He created it using speech and volume. He didn’t mouth the words “let there be light”, He spoke them with authority out loud. This principle was started then and continues today. What we speak out carries authority and therefore creates either good or bad for our world and others.
Let’s go back to our verses in James. It states that a spoken word may seem of no account but that is not the case. Every spoken word out of our mouths is important.
In Matthew 12: 36-37 in the Message Bible, it states:
Let me tell you something: Every one of these careless words is going to come back to haunt you. There will be a time of Reckoning. Words are powerful; take them seriously. Words can be your salvation. Words can also be your damnation.”
There is coming a time when our words will be judged. That is why it is important to not only repent for wrong actions but also wrong words. The blood of Jesus is powerful enough to redeem our words. Maybe you and I have never thought of this. We might need to stop a moment and repent.
In verses 5 to 6 in James, it tells us how destructive our words can be. However the opposite is also true. Our words can bring healing to our bodies, encouragement to others, build someone up, pray for those hurting, see people change for the better and bring revival to our land. Our words can bring the fellowship with God we lost in the Garden of Eden back. Our words can bring heaven to earth so that all may see Jesus in you and Jesus in me.
So this week and going forward, let’s take account of our words and bring light to this darkened world.
Bless you and keep living the life God intended for you.
