Let go and let God

March 4, 2026

Hi how are you all today? I am well. Last week was just an ordinary week. I like ordinary weeks. Ordinary weeks tell me that life doesn’t have to be drama filled- they can be mundane. They give us a break from things happening which is good. We all need weeks like that in order for our minds to rest from constant activity. How was your week?

I want to have a look at the phrase- let go and let God. Sometimes, actually often, we look around us and want to control everything. This leaves us not only feeling exhausted but disappointed when our control doesn’t work.

So what is the opposite of that for a Christian- let it go and let God!

In Ecclesiastes 3 in the Message Bible, it states:

A right time to hold on and another to let go,

My question is what are we supposed to be holding onto and what is the right time to let go.

There are may things we should be holding onto and never letting go. They are:

  1. Our relationship with God
  2. Our time in the Word of God
  3. Our time praying to God
  4. Our time loving God
  5. Our time loving others

These things all have to do with our time. Time is precious but it is how we use it that is important. I must confess that I don’t always use time wisely- mainly when I am tired or exhausted.

So what things should we never hold onto and always let go. Some are:

  1. Bad attitudes
  2. Bad habits
  3. Offences
  4. Unforgiveness
  5. Our own selfish ways
  6. Things that stop us from obeying or even following God.

Notice that these things all have to do with our actions or thoughts. God told us to renew our minds and this is why- to rid ourselves of those things that are not good for us.

But what are those things that we can hold onto for a season and then will need to let them go. For some of us, it could be:

  1. Career
  2. Friendships
  3. Church we currently go to
  4. Seasons in God
  5. Roles in Church
  6. Places we live

All of these have to do with decisions we make every day. We get to choose what to hold onto and when to let them go. If we hold on too tightly God will make us let go. Don’t let that happen to you, it is not pleasant.

So in letting go and letting God, what do we need to do? The answer is surrender.

Matthew 16: 24-26 in the Message Bible states:

24-26 Then Jesus went to work on his disciples. “Anyone who intends to come with me has to let me lead. You’re not in the driver’s seat; I am. Don’t run from suffering; embrace it. Follow me and I’ll show you how. Self-help is no help at all. Self-sacrifice is the way, my way, to finding yourself, your true self. What kind of deal is it to get everything you want but lose yourself? What could you ever trade your soul for?

In letting go and letting God, we need to let Jesus take the lead. He wants to lead us in everything pertaining to our lives. We think that this will somehow limit us but in fact the opposite is true. It frees us to live a life we could never do on our own. One full of purpose and possibility.

Jesus said in the above verses, we don’t need to know how it will all work out, just let go and follow.

The things I have done in the last few years, I could never have imagined it. It is beyond the imagination of when I was twenty years old with a newborn and not much of anything.

Sometimes we think self sacrifice is hard but so is living to please yourself and others. If we aren’t self sacrificing, we are usually living a selfish life or a people pleasing life and neither of those will bring us the fulfilment we crave.

Jesus left us with a couple of questions at the end of those verses and I want to do the same.

What would your day/ month/ year/ life look like if you just let go and let God?

What would your purpose look like if you let go and let God?

Wouldn’t it be good to find out. So let’s start this journey today of letting go and letting God and seeing where it leads.

You can do it. I know you can.

Bless you and keep living the life God intended.
