Hi how are you all today? I am well and have had a great but busy week. My son’s friend was married and we were honoured to attend the wedding. We had a great time. Did you do anything special this week?
This blog I want to talk about our personal walk with God. Too often we compare our walk with God with others and we come up short. But God does not want us to be in a place of condemnation especially in relation to our relationship with God.
We hear someone speaking and they state they pray for an hour a day but we can’t seem to spend five minutes with God. We get upset with ourselves and think why bother. But what if there was a different way?
Let’s look at some Bible characters and their relationship with God.
- Abraham – he is a man of faith but how often does the Bible record God speaking to Him. Maybe five times. Why is that? Because our relationship with God is not based on performance or how many times He speaks to us but it is in those times of quality intimacy with Him.
- David- we know that David sang praises to the Lord but was this daily. The Bible doesn’t record the time spent because of the above reasons.
- Deborah – only one story is recorded about her in the Bible. Does this mean her relationship with God was only in relation to this main event? No – there was a personal walk with God that is not recorded.
So what does a personal walk with God look like?
First we need to live a life that pleases God. How do we do this?
In Hebrews 11:6, it states that without faith, it is impossible to please God. How do we get faith? By hearing and hearing the Word of God. That is why daily Bible reading is so important. To love God and please Him we must believe that He is without physically seeing Him and that He loves us, sent His Son to die for us so we might be reconciled to Him.
So we know we need to live to please God, so how do we do that?
Let’s look at 1 John 2 verses 2 and 3 in the Message Bible.
2-3 Here’s how we can be sure that we know God in the right way: Keep his commandments.
We need to keep Gods commandments. How do we know what they are? They are in the Bible. Jesus told us what the commandments were in Mark 12: 29 to 31 in the Message Bible. It states:
29 “The most important one,” answered Jesus, “is this: ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.[e]30 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’[f]31 The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’[g] There is no commandment greater than these.”
They are love God and love others.
We can only love someone when we get to know them. What better way to get to know God than reading the Bible and learning and discovering all about Him- His character, His love, His plans etc.
Part of loving God is communicating with Him. We can’t love someone if we don’t talk to them. In the natural if we really like someone we want to get to know them- what they like, what they don’t like, how they feel, what their favourite thing is etc.
We need to know God in the same way and we can do that by praying which is just talking to God.
Sometimes I talk to my husband a lot and other times I don’t. Same with God- there is no formula or set time. But relationships deepen when we spend time daily with the One we love.
Part of loving others is also communicating with them. That means regularly attending church and other activities with Christians. We can love someone by encouraging them and they can encourage us.
If we love others, we will also help them to know Jesus too so they can live an amazing life.
So you can see from our short look at our personal walk, that it is really personal. You are unique, uniquely loved by God and should have a unique walk with God.
Nurture your relationship with God and it will deepen and be amazing.
Bless you heaps and keep living the life God intended for you.
Karen
