Hi how are you all today. I am well and have had a great weekend – relaxing, doing chores, attending church and prayer meeting. How was your weekend?
This week I want to remind you and I to walk in step with God. Sometimes when we start to dream about what our life could look like, we start to put our own plans in place to make it happen. Why? Because we are mostly an impatient people- we can’t wait for God. How many times have you and I said – I wish God would hurry up. God is never in a hurry but His timing is perfect. We don’t see the big picture over our lives- only He can because He is outside of time and therefore, doesn’t operate in it.
So the best thing for us to do is learn to walk in step with God.
How do we do this? Let’s look at a verse in Psalm 37:23 -24 in the Message Bible:
Stalwart walks in step with God;
his path blazed by God, he’s happy.
If he stumbles, he’s not down for long;
God has a grip on his hand.
First let’s look at the meaning of stalwart. A stalwart in the Oxford dictionary means loyal, hardworking and reliable.
This is the sort of person that keeps in step with God and should be a description of each one of us. We should be loyal to God, relying on God for everything and staying in faith in God and His Word at all times. Then the verse states that our path will be blazed or opened up by God and we will be happy. If we fall, we won’t fear or stay down because God is with us. What a promise!
Let’s look at a person in the Bible who couldn’t wait for God. God gave King Saul instructions through Samuel the prophet in 1 Samuel 13. The instructions in the ESV Bible were:
He waited seven days, the time appointed by Samuel. But Samuel did not come to Gilgal, and the people were scattering from him
The instructions were wait for me for seven days. That instruction is neither hard to understand nor hard to obey. Except when you are the king and waiting with your army and the enemy is coming against you.
We have all been in situations like that. God tells us He will provide for us but the bills are screaming at us to be paid or God said He would heal us but the symptoms are getting worse. We have all wanted to and probably have walked out of step with God.
So what happened to King Saul and his army?
So Saul said, “Bring the burnt offering here to me, and the peace offerings.” And he offered the burnt offering.
Oh no! It was not the kings job to offer offerings to God – only the priests responsibility. He stepped outside his role. How often do we do that? We play “God” with our circumstances and try to solve the problem on our own. Not a good idea.
What were the consequences of King Saul’s actions?
13 And Samuel said to Saul, “You have done foolishly. You have not kept the command of the Lord your God, with which he commanded you. For then the Lord would have established your kingdom over Israel forever. 14 But now your kingdom shall not continue. The Lord has sought out a man after his own heart, and the Lord has commanded him to be prince over his people, because you have not kept what the Lord commanded you.
That was a high price to pay for not walking in step with God.
Sometimes that happens to us too and we blame God for the consequences, when it really is our fault.
In this year of reimagining, make sure you are walking in step with God and not running ahead or even lagging behind. It is time for us to get in step with God- we have work to do for Him and the time is short.
Let’s be obedient and trusting in God in everything and walking with Him every step of the way.
Bless you and keep living the life God intended for you.
