The power of one

July 10, 2022

Hi how are you all today? I hope you are good. I am on holidays so time for a restful break for me. It is still so cold in my town and they are saying it is the coldest it has been for quite some years. No snow as it is too dry! So on to the post.

As I sit here writing this, I too am interested in where this message will go. I asked God a few times for the title and this was it. I could post again on the power of unity but I believe that God wants me to take this message a little deeper than that.

We could argue that the verse in Ecclesiastes 4:12 states that two are better than one and that a threefold cord is not easily broken. But this passage is talking about being there for one another and supporting each other.

The power of one is in one mind and one focus. I will give an example and then look at it further. When we are in church worshipping and praising God with our songs, are we totally focussed on God or other things. Most of us would say God but I dare say things creep into our minds.

The power of one is being totally focussed on God. King David was a man like this. Through his story in 1 and 2 Kings we see him tending the sheep, playing music to God, asking God for battle strategies etc. God said of David that he was a man after God’s heart. Didn’t he sin? Well yes but he also knew how to go to God and repent. David knew that the power of One, the power of God in his life was what brought him through.

Let’s look at Paul. In Philippians 3:13 in the NKJV Bible, Paul states:

Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead,

Paul was concentrating on one thing because he knew the power of one. He didn’t waste time chasing all things but just one thing.

Sometimes we race around madly trying to do and be all things. However, God wants us focussed on one thing. Mary in the story of Mary and Martha had it. In Luke 10: 41-42 in NIV Bible, Jesus says:

41 “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, 42 but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”

So what did Mary choose? She chose to sit at Jesus’ feet and listen. In the busyness of the day and at that particular time, only one thing was needed and there was power in that one thing. Martha wanted to be a perfect hostess but it wasn’t the time for eating but listening.

People – I can hear God saying to each of us that it is time to slow down and realise the power of one. In much busyness we only do half jobs but in slowing down, we do that one thing we’ll.

Jesus wants us to have an abundant life not a stressed life. So to keep living the life God intended, let’s slow down and realise the power of one.

Bless you

Karen
