Christmas – the promise

December 6, 2021

Hi how are you all this week? I am well and continuing to trust God and rely on His strength as my mum navigates the journey called end of life. It is exhausting for me and frustrating for her but we have had some lovely times of reminiscing.

I am going to go back a bit from last week and tell Mary’s story. I feel there are some words that she spoke that really need to resonate with us and get us back on track to where we are anchored in Jesus.

So let’s begin. Mary was excited. Joseph had asked her to marry him. She was spending her days helping her mum and brothers and sisters around the house, as well as getting things ready. It was Joseph’s responsibility to build the house but hers to furnish it and fill it with the things they needed.

Her mum had been giving her things for years. But now it was time to put it all together. She had her cooking pots, her linen and was making the bed cover. All was going well and she was pleased with her progress.

However, one day her plans became unstuck. She was sitting quietly in her room when all of a sudden, a light shone around her and an angel was standing there. Fear not, he said. What – that was impossible to do. But Mary had read the stories of angels visiting others. What could this mean? All she could do was listen.

The angel told her that she was going to become pregnant with Jesus through the Holy Spirit and she would have a son and call His name Jesus. The angel then mapped out Jesus’ future. Then Mary said some astounding words – be it unto me according to your word (Luke 1:38).

Mary didn’t understand what the angel was telling her. A baby would be conceived without her knowing a man. But her trust in God and the prophesies she had heard must have stirred something within her. How was she going to tell Joseph and would he still want to marry her?

She may as well send a messenger soon which she did. But the messenger came back with surprising news . An angel had also visited Joseph and he still wanted to marry her.

Mary quickly arranged everything so the wedding could be hurried. Then she went to live in the house that Joseph built.

What I want to really concentrate on is Mary’s words- be it unto me according to thy Word. This phrase should be resonating deep within each of us every single day.

  • I am sick – be it unto me according to thy Word – I am healed by the stripes of Jesus.
  • I am broke – be it unto me according to thy Word – all my needs are met according to His riches in Christ Jesus.
  • I am scared- be it unto me according to thy Word – God did not give me a spirit of fear but of power, love and a sound mind.
  • I am lonely – be it unto me according to thy Word – Jesus sticks closer than a brother.

There are many other promises in the Bible for each of the situations we face. But instead of dwelling on the situation, let’s turn it around with be it unto me according to thy Word. It may take a while for you to really believe what you are saying but when you do, faith will come and nobody will convince you otherwise.

So this week, be like Mary. When we don’t understand, trust God and stand on His Word.

Bless you heaps and keep living the life God intended for you.
