Destination not advised

One of the most interesting characters in the Bible is Abraham. He came out of a heathen nation because God said and then he believed everything God told him even though God only spoke to him a few times. Leaves my faith and trust in God looking a little shaky. But that’s not what I want to talk on today. It is on the time in Abraham’s life where God told him to pack up and leave what was normal and go to a place God would show him as he was going ( Genesis 12:1).

If God told me that I would be scared and start to think – where would I sleep, how can my family be provided for, how am I going to make new friends and how am I going to cope – I don’t know where I am going. In the natural, the prospect would seem weird or foolish. But in our walk with God, that is what God requires of us.

We start out on this journey of walking with God. Maybe it happened for you in a church service, at a youth camp or by your bedside. Someone told you about Jesus and being forgiven and having the chance at a new life and you felt like it was the right thing to do – which it always is! But now we find ourself on this journey with the destination unknown. We know God has a good plan for our lives in Jeremiah 29:11. We know that God has given us gifts but how do we navigate along our journey to reach the destination that God has planned for us but won’t completely show us.  Trust me sometimes we don’t want to know about the journey or we would run the other way. Let’s look at some steps to make the journey more palatable somehow.

1. We must carry a deep conviction that God loves us and has a good plan for our life. If you don’t when the going gets tough (and it will), you might decide it’s not worth it.

2. We must have faith in God that He knows what He is doing. Jesus said even we have have real small faith, that is all we need.

3. We need to remember that others have walked this journey before us and have made it through difficult trials. Hebrews 11 shows us this and calls them a great cloud of witnesses. I like to think they are watching and cheering us on – you can do it.

4. We must use the tools that God has given us – His Word, prayer, the Holy Spirit and fellowship with other Christians.

5. We must remember that our battle is not against people (God’s creation) but against the devil and his cohorts.

Wherever you are on this journey called life with God, we must always keep walking forward, even if it is only baby steps. The destination is always in front -never behind and never at the side of us. God will never leave us and will walk with us through it all. Our natural destination is always unknown when we start out but our spiritual destination is always heaven. Comfort each other with these words the Bible says. Have a great week and keep living the life God intended for you.
