Daughters of the day

August 9, 2026

Hi how are you today? I am great but tired. It has been a big weekend of visiting my son. I really enjoy spending time with him but he lives a few hours away from me. My mother’s heart wants to have the conversations and make sure he is going okay. He is but when I physically see for myself, my heart is then filled.

Have you ever experienced this?

I want to look at the verses in 1 Thessalonians 5:4-8 and in the Message Bible it states:

4-8 But friends, you’re not in the dark, so how could you be taken off guard by any of this? You’re sons of Light, daughters of Day. We live under wide open skies and know where we stand. So let’s not sleepwalk through life like those others. Let’s keep our eyes open and be smart. People sleep at night and get drunk at night. But not us! Since we’re creatures of Day, let’s act like it. Walk out into the daylight sober, dressed up in faith, love, and the hope of salvation.

This chapter is talking about the second coming of Christ. When I was reading it a few weeks ago, the phrase daughters of day figuratively jumped out at me. Why does the writer use this term here? What does it mean for us?

The meaning of day in the Merriam-Webster dictionary means the time of light between one night and the next. We generally associate day with light and night with dark. If we look at the word light, we know the following:

  1. We can see around us.
  2. We can see who is around us.
  3. We can see what is around us.
  4. We generally feel safe.
  5. There is nothing hidden in the light.
  6. We don’t stumble because our path is easy to see.
  7. There is no deception in light because there is no darkness.

This is the way that God wants us to walk with Him. I John 1:7 states:

But if we walk in the light, God himself being the light, we also experience a shared life with one another, as the sacrificed blood of Jesus, God’s Son, purges all our sin.

Sin cannot hide in the light nor can jealousy, greed or malice. In the light everything is seen.

So how do we walk as a daughter of the day?

It tells us in the verse above- we need to dress ourselves in faith, love and salvation.

Faith- have a deep trust in God that He will lead us in the right way and on the right path.

Love- spend our days loving God and loving others.

Salvation- walk through life showing we are saved (not hiding it under a bushel) and knowing that our whole identity is found in God.

One daughter of the day in the Bible is Sarah. Let’s just consider her story.

In Genesis 12, when God told Abram to leave his country, he wasn’t the only one who left. Sarai had to leave as well- she had to pack up and leave everything she knew because God spoke to her husband. Think about the faith Sarai would have had- faith in her husband and a God not yet known to her.

But Sarai still had some darkness around her life. We can struggle with darkness coming around our lives too but we must never forget that we are daughters of the day. The darkness started with Sarai giving her maid to her husband and only ended after Isaac was born. The son of flesh created darkness in the camp and this can happen to us too. We must guard against it.

It was only after the son of promise, Isaac was born that Sarah started to again walk as a daughter of the day. Before Isaac was born, Sarah laughed at the promise of God but after the promise was fulfilled she rejoiced (Genesis 21).

We, however, now live in the time after Jesus. Jesus took away all darkness so we can be free to walk in the light. Today if you have anything hidden, please bring it to God and I will do likewise.

We need to start walking as daughters of the day so that when Jesus comes we are ready.

Bless you heaps and keep living the life God intended for you.

Karen
