Hi how are you all today? I am well and have had a good week. It was just a normal week of work, chores and church. It is good to have a week that is normal sometimes. For it is in those ordinary things that God speaks.
This week I want to blog on hearing from God. I was discussing this with a good friend of mine and told her that each of us hears from God uniquely. We don’t hear from God the same as we are not robots. It had me thinking of the different ways God spoke to people in the Bible. Let’s look at some of them.
1. Adam- in Genesis 3 it tells us that God was walking in the Garden of Eden looking for Adam and Eve. This must have been how God communicated with them. He came to the Garden to talk with them face to face. This is how we will communicate with God in heaven.
2. Noah and Abraham- the Bible tells us in Genesis that God spoke to them. For some of us this is how God speaks to us. We hear His voice on the inside of us (from our spirit) speaking to us.
Sometimes we hear the voice of God through the words of the Bible. We will be reading along and suddenly a certain verse will speak to us or be the answer to a situation we are going through. God will always speak through His Word if we read it and are open to hearing from Him.
3. Joseph – in Genesis 37, God spoke to Joseph through dreams to tell him of his calling. God does not speak to me this way as I sleep too deeply and probably wouldn’t remember my dreams. But God speaks to some this way. If this is you, then know that God is speaking to you just as He did to Joseph.
4. Samuel – in 1 Samuel 3, God spoke to Samuel by calling his name first. Sometimes God will do this for us especially if we, like Samuel have never heard the voice of God. If you haven’t, try this exercise. Go to a quiet place and say God I love you then listen and hear what God says back. He will speak and then you will know His voice.
5. David – in 1 Samuel and Psalms we can see how God spoke to David and it was in numerous ways. David played the harp when he was younger and no doubt God spoke to Him through song as the Psalms suggest. God can speak this way to us too- through the lyrics of a song especially a Christian one. In those times when we feel defeated or in despair or even sad, a song can speak deeply into our spirits and words can be sung which really minister to us.
God also spoke to David through conversation of questions and answers.
6. Esther- in Esther 4, we read the story of how the king had signed a decree to annihilate the Jews. Esther was the only one that could save them but she needed a word from God. The strategy came to her through a three day fast. When we humble ourselves and pray God will speak to us this way as well.
7. Cornelius – in Acts 10, God spoke to Cornelius through an angelic vision. Cornelius was not yet saved nor was he a Jew but somehow he had heard about God. God always speaks to willing hearts. Then when Peter came to Cornelius, he and all his household and friends heard God through the preaching of the word. We might not have angels coming to speak to us but God can definitely speak to us through the Word spoken in every church service. That is why it is important you attend regularly.
These are just a few of the ways that God spoke to people in the Bible. God is a creative God and there are probably a multitude of other ways He speaks. For example through words on a billboard, a devotional, a book or even in watching nature.
This week be open to hearing the voice of God. Practice listening for it. God wants to speak to you far more that you want to hear Him. Just be open and make sure you have no unrepented sin or doubt in your heart that may be blocking the voice of God.
Bless you and keep living the life God intended for you.
Karen
