Hi how are you all today? I am well. Yesterday marked the first day of the winter school holidays in my country. I don’t have children at school anymore so don’t usually take holidays at this time of the year. It is too cold and we can’t go skiing as there is no snow where I live. Does your family still take holidays in winter?
This week I want to talk about the importance of the head. In a spiritual sense, it tells us in Colossians 1:18 that Jesus is the head of the body. Who is Jesus’ body ? The church – this means you and I. But if we are the body connected to the head, what are the functions of the head that we need to give over? You will see what I mean in a few sentences.
Let’s look first at some of the purposes of the head and how they pertain to our walk with God. They are:
1. Eyes to see. Eyes do the seeing for the body. They help us see the colour in the world around us, see obstacles in our path and see creation and the beauty of people. They colour our world in a way that’s not possible without our eyes.
When we are a Christian, we need to see the world through the eyes of Jesus. This is one area we all need to work on. Whose vision are we seeing through? If I look through my own eyes I see chaos, destruction and ugliness. If I see through the eyes of Jesus, I see potential, people loved by God and needs I can help meet. Where is our seeing?
2, Ears that hear. Ears help us navigate our way around. We can hear the sound of a speeding car, a siren, children’s laughter, birds tweeting and my dog whinging at me to be let on the bed.
When we become a Christian, we need ears to hear like Jesus. This is another area to work on. Am I hearing the message preached and allowing the Word of God to change my life, am I hearing the silent cry of the needy, am I listening to peoples stories and offering them hope and encouragement or are my ears hearing negative comments and unsavoury words? Where is my hearing?
3. A mouth that speaks. You can learn a lot about people by talking with them. Jesus did. He spent time with people teaching and preaching to them. He didn’t preach religious practices but how to live life well.
How is my speaking? Am I using it to encourage others or tear people down? Have I got words of worship on my lips and thanksgiving to God? Am I talking the way the world talks – doom and gloom or am I speaking truth and the power of God? How and what am I speaking?
4. The brain is for processing, thinking and feeling. My question to me and all of us is what am I thinking?
Philippians 4:8 -9 in the Message Bible tells us:
Summing it all up, friends, I’d say you’ll do best by filling your minds and meditating on things true, noble, reputable, authentic, compelling, gracious—the best, not the worst; the beautiful, not the ugly; things to praise, not things to curse. Put into practice what you learned from me, what you heard and saw and realized. Do that, and God, who makes everything work together, will work you into his most excellent harmonies.
This verse tells us how to think but often we are thinking negative thoughts, fear based thoughts or even vengeful thoughts. This is not what we should be thinking if we are the body and Christ is the head. Let’s work on changing our thoughts.
So you see if we are operating in the Spirit as the body of Christ, let’s do our seeing, hearing, speaking and thinking through the lens of Jesus. These are some ways we can show the world Jesus.
You can do it and so can I. Bless you and keep living the life God intended for you.
Karen
