Mothers – warriors for God

May 11, 2025

Hi how are you all today? I am well. It is Mother’s Day today which is a day to celebrate all those who are mums in any capacity. Some of us are mums because we birthed our children, others are step mums, foster mums, adopted mums and spiritual mums. But today can also be sad for some as they have lost their mums or even children or they were unable to have children. I just send out big hugs to all of you.

This blog I want to write about mothers but in a different way. We use words such as nice, kind and lovely and good to describe our mothers. But I want to discuss an element that is equally important. As a Christian mum, we should also be a warrior mum.

I don’t mean beating up other mums in the school parking lot but actually fighting for our children in the spiritual world. This is especially necessary in the current world we live in.

I want to look at a particular mother in the Bible who was a warrior mother. Her name is Deborah and her story is found in the book of Judges.

We first meet her in Judges 4:4. The Bible states she was a prophet, a wife and a judge. This is the job description of a mother. We are a prophet- we speak identity, love and future into our children. We are a wife- we are married to our husband or if we are a single mum- God states that He is our husband (Isaiah 54: 5-8). As a wife, we are the manager of our homes. We are a judge- we bring discipline and direction to our homes.

I didn’t always do this well with my children and have had to repent but God forgives me.

In verse 6, Deborah received a Word from God and delivered it to Barak, the commander of the army. God told him to go up and fight against Sisera, the commander of Jabin king of Canaan’s army and all his troops. However, Barak wouldn’t go unless Deborah came with him.

This was unprecedented. Women didn’t go to war only men did so why did Deborah have to go.

God had made her a judge over Israel. Why? We don’t know- we can only assume that no man would obey the call from God. She is the only woman judge in the book of Judges.

Maybe it is because God was saying to His daughters, through this story that both men and women are called to fight the battles.

In Judges5:7 in the NKJ Bible, is states:

“Village life ceased, it ceased in Israel, until I, Deborah, arose, arose a mother in Israel.”

Deborah was a mother to a nation and God called her to fight. But first she had to arise and say yes to God.

It is time for the mothers who are Gods daughters to arise and fight for our children. Our children can be our natural children or those young ones in our church that need the mothers to stand up and fight for them. The world’s culture at present is totally opposed to God’s kingdom so we need to pray and use our voices to battle for the children. If you have adult children, this means them too.

So my question is whose life am I speaking into? Who am I coming alongside to be a mother to them? Am I in a prayer battle for my children or have I given up? Has the battle become too long or fierce for me?

Mothers, God has put us here for such a time as this and He has graced us to be a mother. So let’s arise, take back our position and march forth. Our children are watching to see if we have spiritual tenacity. It is time to show them we have.

You can do it! I encourage you all today- don’t give up! God and you have got this.

Bless you and keep living the life God intended for you.

Karen
