Hi how are you all today? At present I am stuck on a train so it will take me a couple of hours to get home from work. Other than that, I am good and have just had a relaxing holiday. How was your week?
In this post, I want to look at the name of Jesus. Most of us sing the songs with those words in it or read the Bible and notice those words but have we pieced together what they might mean for us.
Let’s look at some verses with this amazing phrase in them.
The first one is Hebrews 10 verse 13 in the NIV which states:
13 for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lordwill be saved.”
This means that the name of Jesus is important for our salvation. In fact in John 14 verse 6 in the NKJV, it states:
Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
This means that Jesus is the only way to salvation. So the name of Jesus is important in the first steps of the Christian walk. Is that it then? Of course not, God would never leave us to flounder on our own.
In Mark 16: 15 to 18 in NKJV Bible it states:
And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. 16 He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. 17 And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues;18 they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.”
So in these verses it tells us that signs will follow us as believers as long as we use the name of Jesus. Those signs include casting out demons and praying for others healing. This doesn’t happen for me often but my question to me and maybe for you is- are we believing for this.
What about our everyday life? Is the Name of Jesus relevant to that? Yes- in Colossians 3:16, it states in the NKJV-
17 And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him
Everything we do, everything we say and every place we go should be all where Jesus wants us to go, what He wants us to say and what He wants us to do. In other words, we walk in the authority of the Name of Jesus wherever we go.
How does this help us? Well for one thing we are never alone- He goes with us. We can rely on His strength, His ability worked out in us and His love wherever we go. This is good news. We should never feel lonely. If we do, we have forgotten Jesus and the Holy Spirit Who lives in us.
The last thing I will mention is that the name of Jesus needs to be used when we pray or talk to God. Let’s look at John 14: 12 to 14 in the NKJV. It states:
12 “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father. 13 And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.14 If you ask anything in My name, I will do it.
Verse 13 is our key verse and says whatever we ask for in the Name of Jesus will be ours. Does that mean we can ask for a lot of money so we can laze on the beach. Probably not! Look at the last part of that verse- it is to bring glory to God that we can ask.
So my question is- are we asking so that God can be glorified or are we asking so we can be glorified? This is all about motives. When you pray and ask- let’s check ourselves to ensure what we ask for will bring God glory.
This week think about the name of Jesus and how relevant it is for our everyday. Let’s make sure to remind ourselves that Jesus is with us and so is the Holy Spirit.
Bless you and keep living the life God intended.
Karen
