Hi how are you all today? I am good but feeling a little older today as my youngest turned 32. Where did those years go? I have no idea. If you have young children, please treasure the time. I heard a saying “the days are long but the years are short”. It is so true. How was your week?
In this post, I want to pose a question. Who or what do we rely on? In this year of renewal, do we need to ask ourselves this question? I believe we do.
For this year of renewal if I am relying on myself, think how hard it is to renew yourself? Most of us can’t go past a few weeks of a new thing in our own strength. Our New Year’s resolutions are quickly forgotten about or deemed too hard.
Do you rely on others more than you should? When we rely on others and get our strength from them, we often find over time that they fail us. They don’t mean to but others cannot live up to our expectations for them. Most of them don’t even realise what we expect them to do or be for us.
Do we rely on the superficial world of social media? Is that where our identity and worth come from? Are we disappointed by how little likes or comments we receive on a post? Does having a good feel about ourselves rely on the opinions of others? Most people that receive a heap of likes and comments don’t even know the people who are liking or commenting. There is no actual relationship present.
I have been guilty of all of the above but in the end there is only One that I want to build my identity in. There is only One that will never let me down or fail me. There is only One that will be there through all my highs and lows. There is only One who will love the unlovable me and renew me in places that I need to be renewed in. Who is it? Jesus
Proverbs 3: 5 to 12 in the Message Bible states:
Trust God from the bottom of your heart;
don’t try to figure out everything on your own.
Listen for God’s voice in everything you do, everywhere you go;
he’s the one who will keep you on track.
Don’t assume that you know it all.
Run to God! Run from evil!
Your body will glow with health,
your very bones will vibrate with life!
Honor God with everything you own;
give him the first and the best.
Your barns will burst,
your wine vats will brim over.
But don’t, dear friend, resent God’s discipline;
don’t sulk under his loving correction.
It’s the child he loves that God corrects;
a father’s delight is behind all this.
These verses start off by saying trust God. If we are going to trust in something or someone, it means we totally rely on them. Trust in the Oxford dictionary means:
“firm belief in the reliability, truth, or ability of someone or something.”
It means we have a firm belief that God is reliable, is truth and has the ability to do what we need Him to do.
God is the only one we should be relying on. Why? The next part of the verse above tells us. If we try and figure everything out, we will get off track but if we rely on God, He will keep us on track.
How do we do that? Listen to Gods voice by reading the Bible and talking to Him. We can also listen to sermons and podcasts too.
The next part of the verse tells us what we can rely on God for. It includes healthy body and overflowing provision. That is two good reasons to rely on God only.
This week when we find ourselves relying on something or someone other than God, let’s stop and run to Him. He is a good God.
Bless you and keep living the life God intended for you.
