Where is the lamb

April 10, 2022

Hi how are you all today? I am recovering as I have had Covid. It left me feeling very fatigued but other than that, I have managed my symptoms at home. I pray none of you have had it or if you have, that you have recovered wholly from it.

This week I want to look at the Last Supper and the significance of what may not have happened that should have. We are going to start in Luke 22:7. That verse states that the Day of Unleavened Bread came when the Passover Lamb must be killed. Jesus sent two of His disciples to prepare for the Passover and they prepared it.

Now what was the significance of these two days. Let’s look at Passover. On the tenth day of the month, the Israelites were to choose a lamb and on the fourteenth day, they were to kill the lamb and start eating unleavened bread for seven days. (Exodus 12).

So in the story in Luke 22, we see that verse 7 starts on that fourteenth day of the month. Jesus has Passover with His disciples in verse 14 and breaks bread with them and drinks wine. But there is no mention of them eating the lamb. Is this significant or was it a detail left out?

We base communion on what happened at the last supper but communion for us only involves bread and wine and not an actual lamb. The book of John chapter 13 indicates that this last supper may have been before the first day of unleavened bread, although the other gospels don’t indicate that.

For me, the question isn’t about the day but the absence of the lamb. You see Jesus is that Passover Lamb. He is the one that was killed so our sins might be forgiven and our sicknesses and infirmities healed. Jesus broke bread and drank wine to show His disciples the significance of that part of the old Passover.

Jesus was chosen as the spotless lamb of God years before Passover was instituted. We celebrate it today as communion where we remember Jesus’ body broken before and on the cross for us and the blood that He shed for our healing and protection. The Word of God made flesh. The Bread of Life broken for us.

Was there a lamb at that last Passover? Yes – it was Jesus – the Lamb of God Who takes away the sins of the world. The One that is our Saviour, Redeemer and so much more.

Easter is such a special time for me as it is my remembrance of my sin and Jesus’ redemption of me. The day that light overcame darkness and a bridge was once more constructed between heaven and earth. The day that God and man once again were reconciled like in the Garden of Eden.

This Easter make sure you rejoice over all that God has done for us and the kindness He showed in sending Jesus. Accept Jesus this Easter as your Lord and Saviour so you can truly live the life God intended for you.

Bless you

Karen
