Fixing the foundations

January 29, 2020

Hi how are you all? Well it has been a hot week here. On Sunday we celebrated Australia Day. It was also my youngest son’s birthday. Double celebration? How has your week been? Last time we talked about the fact that 2020 is the year of restoration. In last week’s blog, we talked about pulling the walls down that we have built around ourselves. This week I want to focus on fixing the foundations.

For that I want to look at what is our foundation and what do we build it on? So let’s start. What is our foundation? We need to look at Ephesians 4: 4 to 6 in the Message Bible. It states:

“You were all called to travel on the same road and in the same direction, so stay together, both outwardly and inwardly. You have one Master, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who rules over all, works through all, and is present in all. Everything you are and think and do is permeated with Oneness.”

These are our foundations that enable us to walk in unity with other Christians regardless of what denomination they are or what church they attend. The first sentence calls us to walk in unity together. How do we do that when our church has services that are different than theirs. The next sentence gives us our starting point or our foundation. To be a Christian (or Christ follower) we must believe in the following:

  • One Master or Lord – we must believe that Jesus was the Son of God Who came to earth to live and then die for our sins on a cruel cross. He then rose from the dead and is now seated at the right hand of God praying for you and I. Jesus came to reconcile us to God.
  • One faith – we must believe that God’s Word ( the Bible) is true and that all the promises in it will come to pass for us if we will only believe them.
  • One baptism – we must believe that as Jesus was baptised in water so we should be too. It is a symbol of washing away the old life and coming up to a new life.
  • One God and Father – we must believe that there is only one God Who rules over all the earth but Who loves us deeply. We must believe that God is not only just, He is also our Father.

Those are the foundations of our faith. So how do we set them properly?

The parable of the wise and foolish builders in Matthew 7: 24 to 28 is how we ensure we have a firm foundation. Jesus said the way to do this was to hear the sayings of Jesus (the Word of God) and do them. We need to read our Bible, listen to teaching on the Bible and then be obedient to do it. Jesus said if we do this, we will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock- a firm foundation. When troubles came, this mans house stood because he had built it on the right foundations. We need to do the same.

But the foolish man did the same hearing of Gods Word but was not obedient. Because obedience wasn’t found, when troubles came, the foundation wasn’t strong and the house fell.

This week examine your life (I will too) and make sure our foundations are strong and we are being obedient to Gods Word. If yours aren’t, then repent, get right with God and begin building again. You can do it.

Have a great week and keep living the life God intended for you.

Bless you heaps

Karen
