Hi how are you all today? I have had an okay week full of work, chores and appointments. How was your week?
Around your life wouldn’t you like to have a guard? I think of royalty and celebrities around the world and everywhere they go they have body guards. It gives them a sense of safety and security. Would you like to have a bodyguard? Sometimes I think it would be good but my privacy would be compromised and for me, that’s not okay.
Even though most of us probably don’t have natural body guards, we definitely have spiritual body guards. We may not see them and most of the time we forget they are even there but nevertheless they are.
Let’s look at Psalm 121 in the Message Bible. It states:
121 1-2 I look up to the mountains;
does my strength come from mountains?
No, my strength comes from God,
who made heaven, and earth, and mountains.
3-4 He won’t let you stumble,
your Guardian God won’t fall asleep.
Not on your life! Israel’s
Guardian will never doze or sleep.
5-6 God’s your Guardian,
right at your side to protect you—
Shielding you from sunstroke,
sheltering you from moonstroke.
7-8 God guards you from every evil,
he guards your very life.
He guards you when you leave and when you return,
he guards you now, he guards you always.
I really like how this psalm starts. I look to the mountains. As humans, we often look to natural things in order to receive strength. We can look to others, family, friends, our career, our bank balance or even how others see us. But this verse clearly states that even though we may look to these things, only God can be our strength.
He is the one Who created the natural things we draw strength from so it makes sense to just go straight to God. The Bible tells us that when we are weak, He is strong. God is the only one that has the strength we need that will never run out.
Verse 5 states that God is our Guardian. God is our body guard and if we draw our strength from Him, He can never let us down.
Not only is God our strength; He is also our protector. God is the only one that can protect us. Psalm 91 tells us we can hide under the shadow of His wings. God is so big and He has the biggest shadow. That means we can all get in there at once. We don’t have to wait our turn or be left out in the cold.
So let’s look at what God is our guardian from:
- Shields us from sunstroke- sunstroke is when we have been out in the sun too long without adequate hydration. Jesus told us in John 7: 37-39 that He is the water of life. He said that if we go to Him we can drink and never be thirsty again. This is not physical thirst but spirit and soul thirst. Jesus will quench those dry places within us.
- Shields us from moon-stroke- this is where people sleep outside in the cold. God tells us in Psalm 91 that He is our shelter. If we stay close to God, He will warm us and we don’t need to feel out in the cold or left out ever again.
- Guards us from evil- God will always guard us from evil however it is up to us to draw near to Him. If we move too far away from God, evil will find us because we are not near the shepherd.
- Guards our very life- God guards us and is our protector. The blood of Jesus applied over our lives protects us but we need to stay close to God.
The promise in the last verses states that God guards us now which is today and guards us always which is tomorrow and forever more.
God is the greatest body guard and also uses His angels to guard us. We need never fear if we remember that God is with us.
So this week, let’s remind ourselves often that God is our body guard, stay close to Him and He won’t leave you.
Bless you and keep living the life God intended.
