Hi how are you all today? I am well and have had a really busy week at work. In this season, it is our busiest time. Thankfully today is a public holiday so I slept in a bit. What is your favourite thing about public holidays?
In this blog I want to explore step by step. We are not going to look at it from a spiritual sense as we know this is how God leads us but from a natural sense. There is a lot to learn spiritually from our everyday lives. When I was seeking God to ask Him what to write about, He told me to think on my last week. Step by step is all I could do to accomplish anything. Literally it is how God wants us to operate every single day.
God says in the Bible in Matthew 6 not to worry about tomorrow. This means we need to live in today and make today count. How do we do that when work, family, church activities, time with God, rest time are all screaming at us every day for our attention. We need to learn to prioritise and then go step by step.
So how do we prioritise. Well first we need to list what we need to do that day. Most of us will have different time and priority requirements. For me, I need to:
- Spend time with God
- Work outside the home
- Manage my home
- Eat, rest and personal hygiene
- Ministry through blog, writing or pastoral care
Let’s leave my list like that – that is enough for one day. Not all of the above things are done at once. They are step by step throughout the day, except for my work outside of home.
Now I have the big list, when I am doing one of those things, then I need to step by step inside those tasks. For example at work, I read emails, action emails, look after my team and their work. At work, it helps to keep a calendar of those inside step by step tasks I need to do.
If I don’t go step by step I get overwhelmed and accomplish nothing.
So if I am going to implement step by step into my natural routine and in my spiritual walk, how do I do this:
- Get God involved.
Psalm 16:3 in the Message Bible states:
3 Put God in charge of your work,
then what you’ve planned will take place.
We need to ask God daily for His wisdom, His power and His strength to walk step by step throughout the day. I often also pray- Lord protect my time. I am literally saying- God, I have all these things on my list and I want to spend time with you, help me with my time management today. God wants to be involved in our lives but He is waiting for our ask.
2. God enables us to do it
As I was saying above, it is God who helps us. We cannot do it on our own.
Proverbs 16: 9 in the Message Bible states:
9 We plan the way we want to live,
but only God makes us able to live it.
It is God and God only who can enable us to live our lives for His glory and purpose and on purpose.
3. Concentrate on today
Matthew 6:34 in the Message Bible states:
34 “Give your entire attention to what God is doing right now, and don’t get worked up about what may or may not happen tomorrow. God will help you deal with whatever hard things come up when the time comes.
God wants us to pour our attention into today. I don’t know about your day but sometimes I plan to do A, B and C and I end up having to pay more attention to E, K and Y. We need to remind ourselves that God knew this already, prepared us for it and made a way. We just need to learn to trust God with today.
So this week, start walking step by step each day knowing God is in control. Don’t try to walk too far or get overwhelmed by your work load. God has got you- you just need to be in communion with Him.
Bless you and keep living the life God intended for you.
Karen
