Hi how are you all today? I am well and thankfully over my cold. I had a good week at work and this week will be more of the same. I also have the last rehearsal for our church’s Christmas productions. I am in the choir making a joyful noise to God. Are you doing anything in your church for Christmas?
This blog I want to touch on the phrase one day. We can hear it a lot in our everyday lives. People say one day I will do this…. One day I will get healthy….. one day I will serve God more etc. My question is- does one day ever come?
In my experience it doesn’t for it is in what we do today that determines our tomorrow. This is the law of sowing and reaping. Things don’t happen in the future unless we sow or start the journey today.
Do you want to get healthy? Start by eating a healthy breakfast then work your way through lunch and dinner. Do you want to be a counsellor? Start by finding a course you could do or talk to someone in that field. Do you want to learn an instrument? Start by taking one lesson. What does your one day comment sound like? Start today!
There’s a parable in Luke 12: 16 to 21 and in the Message Bible, it states:
16-19 Then he told them this story: “The farm of a certain rich man produced a terrific crop. He talked to himself: ‘What can I do? My barn isn’t big enough for this harvest.’ Then he said, ‘Here’s what I’ll do: I’ll tear down my barns and build bigger ones. Then I’ll gather in all my grain and goods, and I’ll say to myself, Self, you’ve done well! You’ve got it made and can now retire. Take it easy and have the time of your life!’
20 “Just then God showed up and said, ‘Fool! Tonight you die. And your barnful of goods—who gets it?’
21 “That’s what happens when you fill your barn with Self and not with God.”
What does this parable have to do with one day? I believe that our one day comments are tied up in self. They are not Gods plans for our life but our own plans.
I have caught myself doing this as I edge closer to retirement from my job. When I retire I! This is totally tied up in self.
It is like the rich man above in the parable. He had an amazing harvest of crops and couldn’t fit it into his current barns. His issue was not the big crop- it was seeking God to see what God wanted him to do with the harvest.
There could have been widows in his town going hungry but the rich man didn’t care, he was focussed on self.
What was Gods response? It was to destroy the man so he wouldn’t see the fruit of his labours. Sometimes our one days need to be deleted especially if they are tied up in self. This is different from a God given dream.
A dream from God can take years to manifest whilst God does a deep work in us. This is different to our one day comments.
One day comments are generally made as we want an easier life. In the parable above, the rich man wanted to build bigger so he could retire and not do any more work.
Retirement is not in the Bible as God expects us to minister for Him in some sort of capacity until we go home to be with Him. This could mean sitting at home praying for others- it does not necessarily mean physical work.
So let’s be careful with our one day comments and make sure they line up with Gods will for us. We need to be living in the will of God for our life.
This is how we can be sure we are living the life God intended for us.
Bless you
Karen
