Hi how are you all today? I am well and had a great weekend with a coffee date with an amazing friend, church, chores and rest. How was your weekend?
This blog I want to look at unity not sameness- if that is even a word. I blogged on a similar topic a few months ago on staying in our lane. But I really felt to just talk on this topic again.
In the world we live in, unity is not a popular word but sameness is. We all must agree and think the same as others or we get cancelled out or even called names. But that is not the way God created us.
God created us individually and uniquely with different talents, different personalities and different physical appearances. Even in gender of male and female in the Bible, God didn’t stereotype what a male should be like and what a female should be like only that all males have physically characteristics the same as are females physical characteristics the same. We are created in the image of God.
So how do we all get into unity if unity isn’t sameness. Let’s look at the story in Nehemiah 3. This story was around rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem.
In reading the chapter you will notice one thing. The mission of all the people was the same. The mission created unity of purpose. However, the families didn’t all do the same thing. They didn’t fight over the wall near the gate as to who was going to rebuild it. Nor were they tripping over themselves trying to rebuild the same bit of wall. Neither was one family only rebuilding while everyone else was sitting around watching or supervising. No each family was assigned a portion of the wall as part of the mission to work on. Each one’s section of the wall was different and required different things. But they all were in unity in the mission.
Psalm 133 in the Message Bible puts it beautifully. It states:
How wonderful, how beautiful,
when brothers and sisters get along!
It’s like costly anointing oil
flowing down head and beard,
Flowing down Aaron’s beard,
flowing down the collar of his priestly robes.
It’s like the dew on Mount Hermon
flowing down the slopes of Zion.
Yes, that’s where God commands the blessing,
ordains eternal life.
This psalm starts out with the feeling of wonder and beauty when family gets along. This psalm is talking about family in the spiritual and possibly in the natural. When family gets along or is in Unity it is full of wonder and beauty.
Then it gives descriptive text of what it’s like to live in unity. It is rich and all encompassing. The last part states the reward- God commands the blessing- not a wish or maybe or maybe not but commands a blessing. Unity leads to the blessing of God for all who participate in it.
How do we work out unity in our lives? By loving others and not getting bitter or jealous over their achievements but celebrating with them.
We each have a unique calling in God and when we operate in our calling, the body of Christ is strengthened. Nobody can do what God has called you to do as well as you.
This week let’s stay in unity with others and not try to be the same as them. You are uniquely loved and individually gifted.
Bless you heaps and keep living the life God intended for you.
