How do you handle a crisis

August 3, 2021

Hi how are you all today? I hope you are well. In my city, we are yet in another lockdown. It has been over a year since we were plunged into lockdown. So my post is on this and other crises we might encounter over our lifetime.

One thing that really surprised me on Saturday when we went into lockdown, was how negative people were and how much people blame. I guess it shouldn’t surprise me but even Christians were being negatively vocal about it. It got me thinking- how do I handle a crisis but more importantly how should I handle a crisis.

I think the first thing we need to realise is that the crisis does not take God by surprise. He doesn’t instigate them because in John 10:10, it is Satan who steals, kills and destroys, not God. So if God is still God in a crisis, is He the first one I turn to? Even if we cry out, please help.

Let’s look at a crisis that happened in the Bible. There was a great army coming against the people of Judah. It was big and scary. What did the king do? Did he blame his army for not attacking them? Of course not. Sending his smaller army out to fight a big enemy is foolish.

Let’s look at what he did in 2 Chronicles 20 verse 3. It says that Jehoshaphat the king feared (normal reaction) then he set himself to seek God and proclaimed a fast for all Judah. This was not a blame game and negativity, but a complete trust in God Who was the only one Who could help them.

So, number one – let’s seek God in a crisis. Lord, what do you want me to do? I am in lockdown and I don’t have enough food- what do you want me to do. I need to work and homeschool my kids – Lord give me wisdom to know what to do. God will give you the answer for your situation that may be different to others.

Once the king received the Word from God, he mustered his army and went to face that crisis. However, the army didn’t march out any which way. The singers went first. Are you praising God in this crisis or complaining? What does God expect of us? We should walk different in a crisis to others around us. Who are you encouraging today?

Before I finish this post, I want to talk about one more thing. The Bible tells us to honour our leaders- it doesn’t say agree but honour. How go we do that? We pray for them and obey what they say – unless it goes against the Word of God. Mask wearing and staying home is not against the Word of God. If you are in trouble financially, talk to God – He can prosper you in a time of famine just like Isaac if you will trust in Him and believe His Word.

We can all get through a crisis but how you do depends on how strong you will be in God to face the next one.

Bless you heaps and keep living the life God intended for you.

Karen
