Where are you going

May 6, 2018

Most times we answer that question with a destination in mind. Although, sometimes we don’t know where we are going. We seem to be going around in circles. I want to remind you today that God can meet you wherever you are. The Bible says that if we go to the deepest depths, God can find us or of we go to the highest place, God can find us. We are never lost to God.

One Bible story that speaks to us of destination is the Good Samaritan. We usually associate this story with who is our neighbour. But I want to look a bit more closely at the destinations of the characters in this story.

The story is found in Luke 10: 25 to 37. It starts off with a man travelling from Jerusalem to Jericho. Jerusalem in the Bible means the abode of peace or the abode of wholeness – nothing missing, nothing broken. Sounds like a good place doesn’t it. The meaning of Jericho is a place of fragrance -a place that smells good and appeals to our senses.

This man was travelling from a place of wholeness to a place of feel good. Notice it was a “down” road.

Let’s look at the next character. They were a priest and they were also going down the road from Jerusalem to Jericho. They also were running from a place of wholeness – maybe due to offence, pride or something else in their lives. The next character was a Levite and he also was going down the same road.

The last character is a Samaritan. Where was he going? We don’t know where he was going as he was on a journey. There was no destination in mind, it’s just like he was wandering aimlessly around. Maybe that’s the reason he saw the man. He realised that the man was in the same boat as him. Wounded and seeking help on the way to Jericho.

The Samaritan took the wounded man to an inn and went on his way but he was coming to that place again. Maybe he hadn’t found what he wanted just yet.

Where are you on your journey? I pray and hope that you are actually walking the opposite way to the priest and Levite. That you are going from Jericho to Jerusalem. From a place that appeals to the senses to a place of wholeness which is found only in Jesus.

As long as we keep walking toward Jerusalem, we are doing good – taking one step at a time.

If you are going the wrong way, repent and ask for forgiveness – that way you will be turned around and walking the right way.

Bless you heaps and keep living the life God intended for you.
