Famine or feast

July 29, 2015

Famine or feast- what does this mean? Well in the natural, a famine is where there is either no or an under supply of something, whereas a feast means there is an abundance of something. Notice, that neither of these words have the meaning of just enough or average. This is because if we are very honest with ourselves, nobody yearns for or wants just average in our lives and around our world. To tell you the truth, most of us want to live continually in a “feast” situation – one where there is an abundance of everything and enough to bless others. Kind of sounds like the life Jesus came to give us in John 10:10. But the question is, how do we experience continual abundance and isn’t that only reserved for heaven. The answer to the first question will be answered soon but the answer to the second question is a resounding “no”.

One of my favourite stories in the Bible is found in the book of Ruth. Naomi and her husband  and sons moved to Moab because there was a famine in the land of Israel.  In other words, there was nothing left in Israel that could entice them to stay any longer. Ever been in a situation like that!

The family went to the land of Moab where they stayed for a while. The father died there and both sons were married there and eventually died there too!! The land of Moab (which was an idolatrous land ) stole the family’s dreams of a better life and caused them to go deeper into famine. Naomi and her daughters in law had no way to support themselves. They were living in a land of nothing good. This is what happens when we move outside the promises of God. It looks good for a while but eventually it leads to nothing good.

Naomi then heard there was bread again in Israel, so she and Ruth moved back there. The moment they arrived in Israel, they were back living where there was abundance. Now all they needed to do was tap into it, which they did, and an abundant life ensued for them.

In the Bible, it states that in these days, there will be a famine of the Word of God. In the natural, it could mean that Bibles will be scarce (which they are in some countries). But I believe the real danger lies in not walking in the promises for us that are in God’s Word. There is a famine in the church of knowing the Word and living in all that God has for us.

This week, read the Bible, find the Word of God that applies to your circumstances and cling onto that promise and never let it go. As you sow the Word of God in your heart, you will reap amazing benefits and will start living in the land of abundance. Have an amazing week!!
