Sentinels to truth

Hi how are you all? Well today was a great day as I launched my first book in church. Everyone was so supportive and I felt valued. Have you ever had that happen to you? It is good to be in community with other believers with each person walking in unity with their own unique gifting and talent. Just what God desires to see.

This week I want to look at truth. I was reading the story in Mark 13 where Jesus is telling His disciples what will happen in the last days.

Verse 9 really just jumped off the page at me. In the Message Bible, it states:

9-10 “And watch out! They’re going to drag you into court. And then it will go from bad to worse, dog-eat-dog, everyone at your throat because you carry my name. You’re placed there as sentinels to truth. The Message has to be preached all across the world.

We are to be placed in situations where we are to be sentinels of truth. I don’t know about what you think but truth seems to be lacking in todays society. One person says one thing about something then another one says studies say otherwise. Truth seems to be nowhere to be found. But for believers, truth is Jesus.

In John 14:6, Jesus said He was the truth which means as He is the Word of God, the Bible is truth.

So what is a sentinel? In the Oxford dictionary, a sentinel is: a soldier or guard whose job is to stand and keep watch. If we are sentinels to truth then we must stand guard and make sure that truth is delivered. If truth is not delivered, then we must say so.

How many times in our lives have we not spoken up because of fear? Fear is never going to see others set free. Jesus said in John 8: 31 and 32 that the truth will set us free. But it will also set others free.

So how does truth set us free? The Bible tells us how we should live and that we should love God and love others. It is only when our spirits are free and we are in right relationship with God that we can do life as He has said. Walking in love, joy, peace, patience, kindness and self control is a lot more freeing than living in anger, rebellion, disobedience and sin in general. There is a lightness to love and a darkness to hate.

In John 10, Jesus said that He wants us to live abundant lives full of grace, truth, love and prosperity. The alternative is Satan’s way which always leads to death. We can see that in the Garden of Eden.

So this week, let’s be sentinels to truth by watching the words we speak and what we allow others to speak over us. Let’s stand guard so that only good and truth are around us.

Let’s also watch for those opportunities that God gives us to speak truth to others so they can be set free. This is the way that God wants all of us to live the life He has intended for us.

Bless you

Karen
