How do you hear

Hi how are you all? Hope you have had an amazing week. I did and this week coming is good to as I am on holidays. It’s only for a week but I desperately need a break and a rest. Have you ever felt like that? I am sure you have.

This week I want to look at the topic of how do we hear. I have heard it said – do we listen to reply or do we really listen. Listening is a skill we all need to learn a bit more- me included as too often I am in the first category of listening to reply. We need to learn to listen not only to the words spoken but also those that are unspoken. Often they are the most important. A lesson definitely for me.

When I was reading my Bible this week, Luke 8:18 caught my attention. The first part states “Therefore take heed how you hear”. How we hear what?

For the context of this part of verse 18, let’s go back to verse 4. From verse 4 to 8 is the parable of the sower. There are four places the sower sowed. They are by the wayside, the rock, the thorns and good soil. The first three were unsuccessful and the last one was successful. Verse 8 ends with the statement he who has ears to hear let him hear. What did Jesus mean?

The answer is found in verses 11 to 15. The seed that was sown is the Word of God. Every Sunday in church, on podcasts we listen to or in blogs we read that are Christian, the Word of God is sown in our hearts. Is it falling by the way where it gets eaten up? Is it falling on the rock where it gets dried up by the sun? Is it falling on the thorns where they choke it? Is it falling on good soil where a harvest is reaped?

How we hear the Word of God is so important to our spiritual life. The amount of Word sown in our life determines our growth as a Christian. It is not the length of time like the natural that determines our maturity as a Christian, it’s the amount of the Word of God that is sown in our hearts.

So my question for you today is how are you hearing? We need to pay careful attention to this. God is not asking us if we like the speaker or writer. He is reminding us to pay attention to our hearing.

So this week, take heed how you hear. This will put you on the right path to living the life God intended for you.

Bless you heaps

Karen
