To know of or know God

Hi how was you week? Mine was good but there is a lot of smoke around from the bushfires. They haven’t been close to us but they have affected family and friends. How was your week?

In the last week or so, I have been prompted – do I know God or just know of Him. I know that I have a relationship with God but how well do I know Him. Let’s just imagine for a minute that your dad is a famous person in your country. Many people are trying to get an audience with him and they have to make an appointment. But not all can make an appointment, everyone is screened to ensure your dad actually knows them.

One day you need to see your dad and it is urgent. Do you have to make an appointment and be screened or can you walk straight in and sit on his lap and talk to him. Of course, it is the second one. Those two scenarios are the differences between knowing of God and knowing God. Because we know God, we have the confidence to just walk in, sit on His lap and talk to Him about anything. We know He hears us and we know He doesn’t judge us.

In the first scenario where appointments and screenings were occurring, how do you think those people felt. They were probably going to be careful in what they said, they definitely couldn’t sit on his lap and the conversation would have been formal and stilted. Judgement and fear may have been involved.

My question to you is which scenario plays out when you want to talk to God. Do you come to Him with fear and trembling or run in to Him and sit on His lap?

Hebrews 4:16 tells us to come boldly to the throne of grace. Grace means no judgement or condemnation. When we come boldly in, we are coming in knowing we are a child of God. The verse then goes on to say that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need. The throne of grace is a safe place. It is a place where we lay down burdens and pick up blessing. It is where we lay down sin and pick up forgiveness. It is where we lay down anger and pick up peace. It is where we lay down unworthiness and pick up that we are a son or daughter of God.

This week check your relationship with God. Is it an I know God and have relationship or is it I know of God and have religion. If it is the latter, I pray that you will come to the throne of grace and find the love and mercy you need. You deserve it because of Jesus. I believe in you.

Have a great week and keep living the life God intended for you.
